National Work Life Week

Running your own business can feel like a tiring and an uphill battle. Flexible working hours are becoming more and more important when it comes to finding the right business.

A perfect work-life balance is something everyone desires, but it can often be a struggle to achieve – sometimes there just never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done.
As a franchisor we believe in highlighting the importance of creating a healthy balance between your working life and your personal life.

Our business model is built on creating the desired work-life balance whilst also enabling our franchise partners to sustain a profitable business. Most of our franchise partners are able to do the school run during the week or watch a school play – working around their daily coffee round.

Achieving a good work-life balance is essential, however, it looks different for us all. Here’s what some of our franchise partners had to say to Celebrate National Work Life Week:

Henrik – Really Awesome Coffee Leicester West

“Prior to starting my Really Awesome Coffee Franchise, I spent 30 years managing both independent and branded hotels, up and down the UK, where I was responsible for all aspects of the business, including the satisfaction of our customers, staff, board members and owners. This meant working a lot of hours throughout the day and night, across the whole week and through all festivals and bank holidays and often staying away from my home for days and weeks at a time.

Starting my Really Awesome Coffee Franchise back in 2016, has put me in control and enabled me to work the hours I want to work, choose the events I want to do, earn the money I need, spend time each day with people you are truly glad to see me and most importantly, to spend much missed quality time with my family and new granddaughter. I can honestly say that I wish I had taken the plunge a lot earlier.”

Corinne – Really Awesome Coffee Nuneaton

“Leaving employment in a typical 9-5 job to become self-employed has enabled me to choose the hours that give me flexibility for a healthy work-life balance. I am now available to collect my son from school every day and consequently we get more invaluable quality time together as a family.”

Craig – Really Awesome Coffee Coleshill

“In my last role I was in charge of a medium size factory ,and was always stressed thinking will staff turn up ,will stock arrive on time etc, Since starting up my Really Awesome Coffee franchise I am a lot more relaxed and happy don’t get me wrong it’s still hard work, but driving round chatting to people and providing a excellent service which all my customers appreciate. I can honestly say the last 2 years have been great.”

Kelsey Judge-Porter – Really Awesome Coffee Sutton Coldfield

Kelsey says ‘My favourite part about the business is just being in complete control of my own life. Working on weekends because I want to and because it pays off, and taking time off when I need it.’

Here she tells us more on how it has been going since she launched her Really Awesome Coffee van in Sutton Coldfield.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to becoming a Really Awesome Franchisee?

I used to be a live-in carer for ladies with special needs. I loved my job but I was away from my family far too much and I wanted something where I could work more normal hours and have more control.

Why did you decide to run your own business and why Really Awesome Coffee specifically?

I wanted to work without a boss! Work for myself and build something I’m proud of. Doing something I enjoy. I’m a friendly person so I wanted to work with people, chatting and socialising all day.
I love hard work and Really Awesome Coffee promises you’ll get out what you put in, so I knew it would work out great for me.

Tell us a bit about your training at Head Office and your business launch.

Training was great, I wasn’t nervous for training but I was for my business launch. Worried about making stupid ditzy mistakes (which I did!) But all resolved easily enough.

I’ve had so much help and it’s definitely cemented how hard this would have been without Really Awesome Coffee behind me.

How have you found the ongoing training and support?

Vik – my Franchise Development Manager(FDM) is always reachable. Very professional and helpful.. I feel that Really Awesome Coffee has helped me to make the best decisions for my business while also giving me the freedom to make it my own.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to invest in their first franchise?

It doesn’t matter what you want from the business, it’s going to be difficult either way! But all obstacles are worth it that first day on your own, driving to your first ever stop. Amazing feeling.

Marc & Klara Francis – Really Awesome Coffee Lincoln West

Before joining Really Awesome Coffee, Marc was working for a large internet company in customer services & Klara was working for Hermes as a delivery driver.

We caught up with Marc and Klara recently and here they tell us how it has been going since they launched their Really Awesome Coffee van in Lincoln West.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to becoming a Really Awesome Franchisee?

My name is Marc Francis. I had was in a RTA, when I was 17 years old, which left me paralysed from the chest down. I am now a wheelchair user for the rest of my life. Being paralysed has only made me strong and more determined to achieve goals in life. I played wheelchair tennis and I was working in customer service before joining the really awesome coffee family.

Why did you decide to run your own business and why Really Awesome Coffee specifically?

I decided to run a business because I wanted to be my own boss and provide more for my family. I chose a franchise as the business model is already set up for you and the fact that if you need any help, the support is already there in place, if anything goes wrong. The reason for being a mobile coffee van is because you get to decide the hours you work and not only that you get to work with the public and you can bring them a small piece of comfort into their lives. The reason for really awesome coffee franchise is the company is well branded and the fact they sell great coffee. The writing is self explanatory on the side of the van, clothing, cups.

Tell us a bit about your training at Head Office and your business launch.

The training at head office was well thought out. Being in a wheelchair I was a little bit nervous but they set up a station for me with all the coffee machine at my height, not only that, they set us up with the perfect FDM. We have learnt so much from Scott. It’s has been a great experience and we have both really enjoyed taking on this new challenge. During our launch week, all customers have given us great reviews and all have really loved our coffee and products that we are selling. Without them we would not be this positive about moving forward.

How have you found the ongoing training and support?

Our FDM is amazing, he has so much knowledge about coffee and is always there to guide us help us. The team at HQ have been great and have provided us with the support needed though out the whole process. From start to finish

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to invest in their first franchise?

Take on the challenge and don’t look back!! Live is for living and you make your own goals in life, taking on a franchise is not easy but with a great franchise support you can make your dream come true.

Help us celebrate 100 coffee vans

As we approach 80 franchise partners within our network, we were recently excited to see van number 100 leaving our head office in Coventry!

It has been an exciting decade for Really Awesome Coffee. Starting out with just 1 coffee van in 2010, then operated by our MD – Kevin Haswell, to now cementing our status as the UK’s largest mobile café network as we celebrate 100 vans on the road across the UK.

Kevin said “the plan was always to build a network of franchised coffee vans. However, to actually hit 100 vans, and have an amazing team around me, is a great feeling… and in honesty, I think we’re really only just getting started”.

Being a mobile operation, we have been able to adapt our business model to meet the challenges of the last few years, and these adaptations have helped the network grow and thrive.

Kevin started Really Awesome Coffee having experienced growth in the industry during the 08/09 recession, and the flexibility and control that a mobile coffee business provides, sets us up for continued growth and even more success over the next few years.

Marc & Klara launch van 100 in Lincoln

Marc and Klara had the honour of taking Really Awesome Coffee to van 100. They have hit the ground running since their launch earlier this month with record takings in their first week, and also being firm customer favourites on their daily coffee round.

In his early adulthood, Marc was involved in a life changing road traffic accident, which left him paralysed from the chest down and requiring the aid of a wheelchair. Marc says “Being paralysed has only made me strong and more determined to achieve my goals in life.”

We’re expecting good things (and likely multiple vans) for Marc & Klara over the coming months.

Multi-Unit Operations

Whilst the majority of our network run a single coffee van from home, roughly 1 in 7 franchise partners now operates multiple mobile cafes (with a couple operating 6 each!).

We’re always looking for ways to grow and open up new opportunities for our franchise partners. As well as the standard coffee vans, we also support a couple of coffee shops, some dedicated ‘events’ trailers, some ‘ice-cream & waffle vans’ and some ‘mobile coffee stations’.

We are consistently growing, with new franchise partners joining the network every month, and have already increased the frequency of our Virtual Discovery Presentations to 2-3 per month to cope with the demands of franchise enquiries.

Adam Wilkinson – Really Awesome Coffee Belfast East

After a long and successful career as a Business Development Manager(BDM), Adam thought it was the right time to start his own business.

Here Adam tells us how it has been going since he launched his Really Awesome Coffee van in Belfast.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to becoming a Really Awesome Franchisee?

I was a BDM for SPAR in Northern Ireland, overseeing the biggest independent account in the SPAR NI portfolio

Why did you decide to run your own business and why Really Awesome Coffee specifically?

I loved my previous job but felt like I needed a new challenge and I’ve always wanted to start my own business. I had always thought I would open my own shop but after quite a bit of research and due diligence I decided that Really Awesome Coffee was the right fit for me.

Tell us a bit about your training at Head Office and your business launch.

I was very excited about getting started with Really Awesome Coffee. Once I had my barista training I then became nervous that I wouldn’t be able to make the perfect cup of coffee for my customers under pressure. However, after going back for the 2nd week of training I felt much more confident and realised that I was just panicking a little and my barista skills were good and I was just being a little hard on myself.
During my daily run and events I get a lot of great feedback about the coffee, so that has also helped increase my confidence.

How have you found the ongoing training and support?

The ongoing training and support has been fantastic. Definitely couldn’t have launched my business without the support of the Franchise Development Manager and HQ.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to invest in their first franchise?

Take your time, do your research and go with your gut.

If you would like to find out more about franchising with Really Awesome Coffee and enquire about our exciting franchise opportunity, call us on 0800 043 0271, send an email to enquiries@reallyawesomecoffee.co.uk or book onto one of our upcoming Virtual Discovery Presentations here.

Rob Earl – Really Awesome Coffee Hinckley

Prior to joining the network, Rob had been retired for 2 years but felt like he wanted to do something else. He had been looking at coffee shops or a permanent pitch for a mobile café with his wife, Mandy, but when he discovered Really Awesome Coffee everything appeared to fall into place and subsequent discussions convinced them it was meant to be!

Here Rob tells us how it has been going since he launched his Really Awesome Coffee van in Hinckley.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to becoming a Really Awesome Franchisee?

I was retired for three years and was a house husband supporting my working wife and a young child at school before I became a Really Awesome Franchisee.

Why did you decide to run a business and why Really Awesome Coffee specifically?

We always wanted a coffee shop or something similar. This developed into looking for a permanent pitch coffee van and the conversion idea of a van. We then came across Really Awesome Coffee who’s website mentioned van conversions. I rang Really Awesome Coffee head office and they suggested signing up for a Discovery Day presentation to have a better understanding of the business. The rest is history.

Tell us a bit about your training at Head Office and your business launch.

Training was very relaxed and informative and all staff are passionate about Really Awesome Coffee and supportive to help build and develop my franchise. Customers are pleased to see us and impressed by the van and really enjoy the coffee and other products. Initially, it is very hard with long days. However, what you put in gets rewards!

How have you found the ongoing training and support?

My Franchise Development Manager(FDM) has been very supportive and helpful in developing my round. He keeps in touch whether by phone calls or text messages. What questions he cannot answer he always comes back with an answer later.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to invest in their first franchise?

It’s not just about serving coffee, which I thoroughly enjoy. You also need to consider there is lots of admin and hard work before and after going out on your round for everything to run smoothly.

If you would like to find out more about franchising with Really Awesome Coffee and enquire about our exciting franchise opportunity, call us on 0800 043 0271, send an email to enquiries@reallyawesomecoffee.co.uk or book onto one of our upcoming virtual Discovery Days here.

From Employee to Franchise Partner

from-employee-to-franchise-partner

Ella, who recently took over the Coventry South territory, has been part of Really Awesome Coffee for a number of years working at the Head Office in Coventry. We recently caught up with her and she was delighted to share her journey with us.

“I had been part of the Really Awesome Coffee Head Office staff for over 6 years before deciding to take the plunge and run a franchise myself.

When I first started working at HQ, I was part of a 4 person team, the premises housed a couple of vans (at a push) and we looked after around ten franchisees.

I’ve seen the business grow from these humble beginnings over the years and am happy to say I’ve played a decent role in this too…one of my proudest moments was rebranding the company (I am also a professional graphic designer), and therefore creating a brand that now adorns over 90 vans nationwide!!

Whilst Really Awesome Coffee has grown substantially since I joined, what has remained the same is the camaraderie between the staff, the passion and dedication of the business owner Kevin, and the determination to never stand still and always be at the forefront of the industry.

I’ve seen so many changes in my time in the business, changes that have demonstrated the above. I have always envied those fortunate enough to be financially equipped to purchase a franchise, as it really is a cracking business model.

I’ve seen from the inside how a bespoke point of sale system has been built, a custom built app has been heavily invested in, not to mention the constant improvement in the technology incorporated in the vehicles themselves. I feel I can never stress to people just how much better they are than the rest, you need to see it to believe it!

So, after many years of managing the office and operations, from van build schedules to consumable buying and pretty much everything in between, in March this year I decided to invest in my future and took over the Coventry South franchise (previously Head Office’s training vehicle).

I have absolutely loved my first few months running my own van, the systems in place and the tools at my disposal mean I can earn a very good living using proven systems… and yet still drop my little one to school and pick her up.

I still feel part of the team in a way, a team that now sits at 14 Head Office staff. Kevin works all hours to ensure Really Awesome Coffee thrives, franchisees are looked after and that the brand doesn’t stand still. I think joining Really Awesome Coffee, as corny as it sounds, is like joining a family.

The team are lovely, straight talking, normal people. They will do everything they can to help you grow the business you want, so long as you stick to the workload you agree to in your business plan in terms of the hours you want to work and the lifestyle you want then you will get the support and advice you need to achieve your individual goals. Oh, and the coffee is quite good too!!

Paul Bailey – Really Awesome Coffee Swindon West

Paul joined the Really Awesome Coffee network in March 2021 and has made a flying start running his own business alongside his partner Audrey.

Paul said “I was researching other opportunities and franchises and saw Really Awesome Coffee on a franchise internet page and as I had developed a coffee label in my previous life, this ticked all my boxes. In addition to that, the discovery day really confirmed that this was my future.”

We caught up with him recently to find out how he found the onboarding process and how he’s finding running his new business.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to becoming a Really Awesome Franchisee?

I was a Regional Operations Manager, for a small contract catering company.

Why did you decide to run a business and why Really Awesome Coffee specifically?

The role I held was made redundant during the COVID lockdown and as I did not want to go back into that industry, I decided to look at opportunities working for myself.

Coffee was a large part of my previous role and was a close alignment to what I was doing prior. In addition, the App that was discussed on the discovery day is what clinched it.

Tell us a bit about your training at Head Office and your business launch.

The training in Coventry was great, everyone was really helpful. I wasn’t nervous, I was excited to be starting my own business with the amount of support and from real people.

As for the launch, once we got under way, it was great – I suppose it’s like driving, you only really learn what it’s about once you pass your test – Still loving every second, never a bad day on the van, only the wrong clothes!

How have you found the ongoing training and support?

Great, no problems here, my Franchise Development Manager is great and so is the support from the Coventry head office.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to invest in their first franchise?

You have to have a big personality – you are in charge at the back of the van, not the customer – the product is fantastic and can stand on its own, however, people buy people – if you are seen to be happy and knowledgeable about the product, they will come out, day in, day out.

Start your mobile café business for just £6,500

Since the first COVID lockdown we have seen a surge in enquiries about our mobile café franchise. This is partly down to our ability to continue to trade during COVID, partly down to the increase in demand our franchisees are seeing for the services they provide, and partly due to the increased number of people exploring new opportunities after a redundancy or simply having had time to reflect on their outlooks whilst on furlough.

We are excited to announce the new lower initial minimum investment of £6,500 to get started on your journey as a franchise partner with Really Awesome Coffee. Franchisees still get the same value from joining our network, but the lower initial cost has opened up the opportunity to many more people.

If you have been in touch with us previously, but felt that the initial finance required was too high, we would love to hear from you again.

Virtual Discovery Days

COVID pushed our monthly Discovery Days online, and in doing so we have been able to host more of them – our MD, Kevin Haswell, now hosts Virtual Discovery Day events roughly every 10 days (every third Saturday morning, and every third Wednesday evening).

You can book on to one of these virtual events here.

New Franchise Partners

We have welcomed 18 new franchises since March 2020, and 5 franchisees have also been able to expand (launching additional coffee vans), bringing our total network size to over 75 franchised coffee vans trading across the UK!

Mike in Milton Keynes has added his 4th & 5th van, John in Lanarkshire a 2nd & 3rd van, Peter in Ballymoney has launched 2nd & 3rd van, Paul in Dunstable has expanded from 1 van to 4, and Yousif in Highgate has added a 3rd van to his fleet.

The COVID-19 pandemic, redundancies, and a change to working environments have been the  main driving factors for most of our new franchise partners to join the network.

If you see yourself running a Really Awesome Coffee business and would like to find out more about our franchise opportunities, please get in touch via our website (www.reallyawesomecoffee.co.uk), email (franchise@reallyawesomecoffee.co.uk),  or phone (0800 043 0271).
